Milan Stojanovic, MD, FIPP


With over 18 years of experience in the field, Dr. Stojanovic is well known as an established leader in interventional pain management and minimally invasive spine treatments and highly respected locally, nationally and internationally as a physician, teacher and researcher. He is one of the principal founders of the Spine & Pain Institute of New England.

Since 1994, when Pain Medicine was in its infancy, Dr. Stojanovic was well known for his 15 years of contributions to the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Pain Center – Harvard Medical School, where he was the principal founder and leader of its Interventional Pain Program for 12 years. He introduced many new treatments to MGH including spinal cord stimulation, IDET, discography and new approaches to fluoroscopically guided pain injections. Many of the physicians trained and mentored by Dr. Stojanovic are now respected leaders in the field and practice at institutions such as Harvard, John Hopkins, Stanford, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, University of Miami, Columbia, UCLA, and many other locations around the world. While at MGH, he served as: Director of the Interventional Pain Program, Co-Director of the MGH Pain Center, Director of the Outpatient Clinic, Director of Research, and Assistant Professor of Harvard Medical School. He is also the former Co-Medical Director of the Cape Cod Hospital Pain Management Program.

Dr. Stojanovic is the former Director at Large of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP), Vice President of its Massachusetts Chapter as well as a current Editorial Consultant of its journal, Pain Physician. He has recently been nominated for the First Executive Vice President position, leading to President Elect of ASIPP. He has been publishing his research in well-respected medical journals (e.g. Spine, Neurosurgery, Anesthesiology, American Journal of Medicine, etc.) and book chapters, with over 60 publications. Dr. Stojanovic sits on the editorial board of many journals. He organized many physician training courses in interventional pain management, given well over 100 lectures to physicians in the U.S. and worldwide, and appeared on TV programs.

In addition to two Board Certifications by American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in Pain Medicine and Anesthesiology, Dr. Stojanovic is a Diplomate of additional two certification exams designed to assess and assure the highest level of hands-on expertise and technical skills of Interventional Pain Physicians: American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians (ABIPP) and Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice (FIPP). The FIPP examination has been organized by the World Institute of Pain where Dr. Stojanovic sits on the Advisory Board and is also a Board Examiner.

Dr. Stojanovic did his post-doctoral residency training in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Anesthesiology, and completed two Pain Management fellowships–one at Henry Ford Hospital and the other at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was also a member of the team that pioneered functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study human brain activity in pain states.

Dr. Stojanovic lives in Boston with his wife and two sons. While in college, he was on the Olympic National Rowing Team and now enjoys long-distance cycling around New England in his free time.
